In collaboration with Film maker John Gray and dancer Fred Gehrig, the Oscura project will see the creation of new work in music, dance and image that will ask challenging questions about creativity and mental health, particularly in the context of the effect of mental adversity on creativity. The project draws upon ideas arising from engaging with installations by James Turrell at Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens in Cornwall and Albrecht Durer's Melencolia I, and from resonances with music by Bach, Chopin, Ligeti and Nancarrow.

The project is linked to a larger research proposal led by Professor of Social Psychiatry Rob Poole (Bangor University) in collaboration with Jim Aitchison and others that will examine how mental health problems affect various makers' creative work (and vice versa), in terms of how it impacts their opportunities to make work and develop personally and professionally.
