Art by Jim Aitchison
During many years working to create responses in music to artworks by some of the world's leading visual artists, Jim Aitchison has also been gradually developing his own approach to making visual objects. Starting out with graphic scores, the composer became increasingly convinced that a true, equal blending of visual and sounding domains was rarely uncompromised and not even necessarily desirable.
Ongoing mental health challenges led to reappraisal and a need to work within limitations. A definitive change in direction to create emphatically visual art objects coincided with the latter part of many years of psychotherapy.
The art is made under conditions that clear away as many obstacles to working as possible while maintaining immediacy and the closest contact with the media used - oil pastel on paper.
